Otorhinolaryngology

Otolaryngology is a medical surgical specialty that specializes in the management and treatment of conditions affecting the head and neck. Developed at the University of Iowa School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and led by a faculty of world-class otolaryngologists, this specialty focuses on understanding the fundamental anatomy and pathophysiology of these areas, such as diseases of the ear, nose, and throat.

The courses

  • The course begins by clarifying what patients and professionals need to know about voice disorders.
  • The course describes the last 40 years of knowledge accumulated in the field of physiology of voice production and management options for voice disorders.
  • The course reviews the preparations and steps required during the procedure, including key anatomical points during surgery.

Rhinosinusitis

As part of an effort to fill these gaps, the specialization goes in-depth to offer a comprehensive overview of acute and chronic rhinosinusitis. The course provides instruction on:

  • The potential benefits of sinus surgery.
  • The indications for this procedure.

Hearing loss

Finally, the specialization focuses on the pathophysiology of different types of hearing loss and common pathologies in the outer, middle, and inner regions of the ear. From this learning, students will also understand the different treatment options available for different ear conditions.

Hands-on Learning Project

Learners will be able to:

  • Classify the disorders and treatments of the outer, inner, and middle ear.
  • Identify the basic anatomy and physiology of the speaking and singing voice.
  • Describe the role of surgery for sinusitis and activity assessment.

Visual images and CT scans will be used to review the anatomy of the paranasal sinuses. The microscopic beauty of the sinus mucosa will also be examined, using dynamic multimedia to enhance your understanding. Learners will also appreciate the importance of mucociliary function in the normal anatomy of the sinuses. As a result, learners will be exposed to effective methods of voice production. In particular, you will learn how vocal inefficiency can lead to the development of voice disorders.
