Internship – a five-part course series

A newborn baby is an amazing life, full of beauty and hope. Unfortunately, many babies die or suffer preventable harm even in the 21st century. It is important that babies who are born healthy get a healthy start in the first month of life. There are easy-to-implement care principles that help ensure that babies and families get off to a healthy start, no matter where they are in the world. During this internship, learners will gain the skills needed to care for babies to maximize their health in the hours, days and weeks following birth.

Course program

  • The courses are designed to guide the learner through the process of caring for healthy infants in the first month of their life.
  • The first half of the internship includes:
    • Providing clinical treatments
    • Initial medical interventions
    • Tests
    • Medical assessments
    • Diagnoses
  • The second half focuses on care provided at home, including:
    • Sleep safety
    • diet
    • Connecting with parents and caregivers

Application learning project

Learners will build a deep understanding of infant care, through:

  • Video lectures
  • Questions during lectures (questions for learners within the lectures)
  • Summative assessments at the end of the lesson
  • Sample test cases
  • Case studies by the learners themselves, “your turn.”

What will you learn?

In this course you will learn about key components of supporting parents of new babies. The Parent Support for New Babies course will teach you the best practices for what to expect at the baby check-up and how to support parents, partners and other carers. The course covers postnatal depression, early bonding and touch. The course introduces the important role of supportive partners and parents, in different households, and what this support looks like. With every household being different, how can we provide support effectively as partners, fathers, co-parents, grandparents and other carers? For example, what are the special considerations for adoption? We will conclude the four-course specialization with a guest appearance by a new baby, and a life skills assessment conducted by the course instructor, Dr. Mary Cohen.

What will you learn?

Congratulations! You have progressed through all four Newborn Care courses, each focusing on different dimensions of maintaining the health of newborns in the first month of life. Now we come to a crucial part of your learning – the Newborn Care Final Project – Cases, which is your opportunity to take what you have learned and synthesize, integrate, and apply your knowledge in a series of cases. Interacting with these real-life scenarios will help you retain the content of the specialization and have you ready to apply it in your care environment.

Together, we will experience key moments from the courses, this time through the lens of cases. We will begin with the management of jaundice and the screening and assessments covered in Course 1. From there, we will examine cardiac and pulmonary cases that represent Course 2. We will then enter new territory, the first visit to the doctor after the baby has come home. Here you will integrate elements from Courses 3 and 4, assessing the baby and the primary care providers. No matter in what capacity you provide care to newborns, the experience of this final course will positively impact your understanding and your ability to put that understanding into practice. The babies, families, and other caregivers you interact with will greatly benefit from your cases.
