Applied Learning Project

At the expert level, each week you will complete a series of independent assessments that will lead to the development of a plan to improve your personal communication.

  • In the Oral Communication course, you will complete a series of tasks that will result in a real presentation on a topic important to your organization or to you personally.
  • In the interpersonal communication course, you will develop your personal brand proposition and tools for communicating with different people in different situations.
  • In the writing course, you will improve documents that you distribute to coworkers, managers, and clients.

This course covers communication skills that engineering leaders use every day to motivate, engage, and support people in their organizations. Speaking and writing are fundamental skills in leadership communication. (This topic was covered in Special Courses 1 and 3.) However, leaders also need interpersonal communication skills. Modern business requires communication skills that are effective across cultures, generations, and genders. Communication is also a key skill in building your personal brand. Leaders need to look, act, and talk like leaders. Another important skill is the ability to handle difficult and emotionally charged communications with employees, managers, and colleagues. After all, engineers are often at the center of crisis communications.
