So your team has joined monday.com and migrated their workflow to the platform, but… you still have data and lists in Excel. Don’t worry… we won’t tell anyone. We understand and are happy to help! Read on to find out how to import the rest of your data from Excel to monday.com or export your monday.com data to Excel if you’re not ready to let go yet.
Import data from Excel
In a short step, you can turn all the data from your Excel sheet into a board on monday.com. Before importing your Excel file, make sure the sheet is not protected, otherwise the data will not be uploaded to your monday account.
Click on your profile picture and select “Import Data” like this:

Then, select “Excel” as shown here:

You can choose between dragging and dropping your Excel file into the central window on the screen or clicking to browse through your documents and select your sheet.

Once you select your file, your data will be accepted, and you can click “Let’s Customize Your New Board” to make sure everything appears exactly how you want it!

Select the row in your sheet that will be the column heading for your new board and then click “Next” like this:

Everything above your first row will not be imported to your board.
Select the column in your sheet that will be the first column in your board (your item names) and then click “Next” like this:

Our system is pretty good at predicting which column types are appropriate for your data, but you can manually change them by clicking the drop-down menu for each column. You can only import columns as a number, status, email, date, or text column. However, you can change the column type after importing.
When everything is ready, click “Create Board”.

Importing data to an existing board
There are several ways to import your data from any external source, including Excel, Google Docs, Microsoft Word, and more! Read on to check out some time-saving tips!
Import from Excel or CSV
For this example, let’s say you want to import the following Excel sheet into your existing board:

To import this data directly into an existing board, click the arrow next to the “New Item” button at the top of the board and select “Import Items” from the drop-down menu.

Then select the column from your Excel file that you want to appear as the item name on the monday.com board:

On the next screen, you’ll be asked to map the columns in your Excel file to columns in your monday.com board. For example, you might choose to map the email addresses from your Excel file to the email column in your monday.com board. Unmapped columns will not be imported.

Manage duplicate items
After mapping your items, you will be asked how you would like to manage duplicate items. You have three options.
In the example below, we select “Create New Items.” Click the box corresponding to your selection, and select the blue “Start Import” button to continue:

That’s it! Your items will start uploading. You can close the window and continue working while you wait for all your items to upload.

Copy & Paste Lots of Items
We’ve been thinking about new ice cream flavor ideas in an Excel spreadsheet and we want to move them to the “New Flavor Idea” group in our ice cream flavor board! With one click, we can copy and paste several items from an external source directly into our item group!
All we need to do is highlight the items we want to import and use the keyboard shortcut to copy or right-click to copy like this:

Then, we click ‘+ Add’ in the group to which we want to add these items and use the paste keyboard shortcut or right-click “Paste” like this:

And there you have it! All our items have been added to our board! We can click the ‘X’ in the menu below to deselect these items, or use batch actions to update them to match our board!
Export table to Excel
Let’s check out how simple it is to export our board to an Excel sheet. All we need to do is click on the three-dot menu in the top right corner of our board, click on “More Actions” and then “Export Board to Excel.” Note, a board with up to 10K items can be exported at once.
From here, we can choose whether we want to export just the table or include all updates, and/or sub-items. You can also choose to have a copy of the exported board sent directly to your email address!

This is what our board looks like as an Excel sheet:

If we choose to export our table with updates, we will see the table in one tab, and all the updates and replies in a separate tab in our sheet, just like this:

Export groups or items to Excel
We can export entire groups or individual items to Excel!
- Export groups
To export a group to Excel, simply click the three-dot menu to the left of your group name, and click “Export to Excel.”

- Export items
To export items, select the items you want to export using batch actions. Then, click “Export” in the batch actions bar below.

You will be asked to choose whether to include updates from the update section, sub-items, and whether or not you would like to send a copy to your email address.

Export your account to Excel
Your account administrator can download all account data as a .zip file containing all boards and files including private boards and shared boards . The boards will each be imported as Excel sheets. Check out this article to see how to do this in detail, or read on!
Click on your profile picture, and select “Manage”.

From the Management section, under the “Account” tab of our “General” settings, you can scroll down to “Export Account Data” and click “Export”.

After a few hours, you will receive an email with a .zip file containing all of your account data! Be sure to download it within 24 hours of receiving the email, or you will have to repeat this process.
