Sorting your items is a very simple way to stay organized. It helps you understand what you need to do and in what order so you can complete all your tasks. This article will show you a few ways to sort your board so that items appear in the order that works best for you.
Sort by column
You can choose to sort your items by the column content directly from the column itself. Depending on the column you want to sort by, this will have a different meaning. For example, if you want to sort your items by the date column, they will be arranged chronologically in descending order from the oldest date at the top to the most recent date at the bottom. If you want to sort your items by the people column, then the items will be grouped by the person assigned to them (with the people’s names arranged alphabetically).
To sort your items by column, hover your mouse over the top of the column and click the arrows icon like the one below:

Another way to sort is to click the arrow to the right of the column name to launch the column menu. Hover over “Sort” and then in the secondary menu, click “Sort Column”. Like this:

Secondary sort with multiple columns
You can sort your items with multiple columns from the column menu too! This means that the first column you choose to sort by will be the primary sort. Any columns you choose to sort your items by after the first column will be secondary sorts . Let’s look at this example below to understand how this works.
In the board below, we first sorted by the people column, meaning that our items are ordered by the person they were assigned to in the people column.

Our second sort is by the status column that we labeled “Priority,” meaning that the sorting of the people column still applies, but within each person’s items, they are sorted by labels from the status column.
To do this, we’ll click on the column menu, go to “Sort” and then “Add subsort”, as shown below:

Sorting & Secondary Sorting All in One Place
At the board level, you have the option to sort your board by any column and then sort your board by other columns, all in one place! To start sorting your items, click the “Sort” icon, then click “Add new sort”:

The board’s sorting tool will open with a default sort. The default sort will be to sort by item name in alphabetical order in ascending order:

You can change the default sort for each column and order you prefer by clicking on the column type (which currently says “Name”) and then adjusting the order. For example, I would like my board to be sorted by “Priority” in descending order:

To sort the items, click “Add new sort” and select the second column you want to sort by on your board. In this example, we’ve done a secondary sort by the “Budget” number in ascending order.

Save your sorting
In the image below, we’ve sorted our items by the column of numbers we’ve labeled “Budget” so that the numbers are organized from lowest to highest within each group.
You can save the sort you applied to your items so they stay in that order every time you return to your board. If you hover over the column, you can click “Clear” to return the items to their original order or “Save” to keep this order on your board every time you visit! Remember, when you add new items to your board, the sort will be undone so you can rearrange as needed.

Alternatively, you can also save the order of your sorted items by going to the column menu, then selecting “Sort” and “Save order of items”, as shown below:

Save your sort as a new view
If you would like to sort your board and save it for easy access in the future, use the sort button in the board menu to set the sorting conditions and save it as a new view.
To do this, simply set the sorting conditions and then click the “Save as new view” button in the top right corner. Then, name the saved view whatever you want, and you’re good to go!

Manual sorting
If you want to sort your items in a specific order that isn’t ascending or descending, you can click and drag each item exactly where you want it to appear within your group. You can even drag items between groups!

Alphabetical sorting
Some people prefer to have all their items in alphabetical order. If you want to sort this way, hover your mouse over your first column (your item names) and click the arrows that appear in the center. Like this:

Now, you can see that all the items in each group are sorted alphabetically, descending from AZ. You can click “Clear” to return the items to their original order or “Save” to keep this order every time you visit! Additionally, you can see how many minions are applied to your board by the number next to the “Sort” icon at the top of your board.
