Do you sometimes feel like you’re doing too much manual work? Then we have the perfect tool for you!

monday.com automations are a code-free way to tell the system to automatically perform a task or process. You can set up one automation, and each time the trigger occurs, the action you defined will be performed.

There are a variety of automation options available to suit your needs. Read on to learn more!

Learn the terms

Each automation includes a trigger , a condition , and an action (or multiple actions!).

Show me the explanations for these terms.
  • Trigger: An event you choose that starts the automation.
  • Condition: A requirement that the trigger must meet for the automation to work.
  • Action: An event that occurs as a result of the trigger and the conditions that were met.

Add automation

When you add an automation, you will have the option to customize your own template or choose a pre-made automation template.

To create a custom automation, click the Automation button in the top right corner of your screen. Then click Add Custom Automation :

Now it’s time to customize!

Select a trigger

The first step in building your automation is to click on “When this happens” to select a trigger. You can then select a trigger from the options presented in the drop-down menu.

A trigger can be a column from your dashboard (like status, people, date, etc.) or an action or event (like item created, at any time period, etc.):

In the example above, we selected the “When Date Arrives” trigger. Now it’s time to select the condition for this trigger.

Select a condition

Depending on the trigger you selected in the first step, you will need to select a condition. In this example, we want to trigger an action when a certain date arrives and only if a status column changes to “Working on it.”

Note: The labels displayed correspond to the labels of the selected status column from your dashboard.

If you would like to set additional conditions in your template, simply click the plus sign next to the condition you defined and select another one.

Set an action

Now that the first part of our automation is ready, it’s time to choose an action for it. Click the “Then do this” field to choose from the available options.

For our automation, we chose the “Notify Someone” action, as shown below:download (53).gif

Finally, adjust the exact action that will occur by clicking on the highlighted field.

We selected the “Notify” field to customize the message of the notification that will be sent, and selected who will receive this automatic notification by clicking on the “Recipient” field. download (54).gif

Our automation is now ready! Click the blue Create Automation button to complete the setup.

Multi-step automations

If you want to create longer and more complex automation flows, you can add multiple different actions into a single automation template.

To do this, simply click the plus sign to the right of the action you’ve already set, select the additional action, then fill in the highlighted fields.
