This course is an introduction to careers in sustainability, with an emphasis on the role of a sustainability analyst in public and private organizations. Through a combination of video, text, peer reviews, and interactive content, learners will be able to explain the concept of sustainability and the specifics of the role of a sustainability analyst in an organization. The course is structured around two elements: theoretical knowledge and practical application.
Throughout the course, learners can practice what they learn and get feedback from their peers to build their skills. Additionally, knowledge tests provide jumping-off points to ensure learners understand the required information on each topic presented. Each module begins with a video that introduces the terms covered in the lesson, including interviews with professors from ASU’s School of Sustainability.
Interactive activities and hands-on application are central to the learner experience in this course. This includes participating in short hands-on experiences, practicing practical skills with expert feedback, and creating customized tools like presentations and spreadsheet templates to use on the job on the first day of a new job. The interactive and hands-on activities are specifically designed to teach not only sustainability skills but also professional skills like professional writing, presentation skills, and leading successful video meetings. This combination of practical skills and tailored content makes this course a unique foundation for further specialization.
This course builds on the foundational knowledge learned in the first course in the series. Learners will continue to develop their understanding of global issues such as climate change, while developing their skills in using sustainability metrics, managing waste streams, addressing challenges, and making recommendations for green building. Mixed models continue to be used to provide text, video, interactive activities, and peer reviews so that all learners can add to their knowledge around sustainability issues.
Content reviews and video lectures produced with professors from ASU’s School of Sustainability are the cornerstones of the content presented in this course.
Theoretical and practical knowledge is the key combination that drives this course. Through interactive learning objects and peer review submission, learners are given the opportunity to practice their skills and receive feedback from experts and other learners. Learners also participate in regular knowledge tests throughout the course, with mid-course and end-of-course assessments to assess their overall learning.
This course includes interactive activities, hands-on experiences, and opportunities to build tools such as checklists and memo templates to help learners build confidence in their skills and enter the workforce. Building on the skills learned in the first course, this learning experience provides learners with more personalized knowledge related to real-world scenarios and the skills they will need as they enter the field as sustainability analysts.
The third course in this specialization takes the skills and knowledge that learners have acquired in the previous two courses and develops them into practical skills that will assist the learner when entering the field as a sustainability analyst. These skills include developing sustainability goals and initiatives, reporting and planning, maintaining terminology accuracy, and identifying partners for sustainability initiatives.
The course focuses on the practical application of all the skills that learners have acquired in the previous two courses, through content and activities that combine text, video, and interactive learning sites and content reviewed by peers to support continuous growth and learning.
In the course, the theoretical knowledge presented is directly related to the practical skills that learners will develop, as the content presented addresses critical tasks for a successful sustainability professional. Interactive learning objects and peer-reviewed submissions provide opportunities for hands-on learning and collaboration with other learners. Knowledge tests ensure that learners clearly understand the skills and competencies required in the field of sustainability. At the same time, the practical activities provide them with opportunities to practice these skills and competencies.
As this course is designed to be the final learning experience in the sequence, it supports learners as they prepare to enter the workforce and seek positions in the sustainability field. By providing opportunities to practice developing reports, setting goals, and evaluating potential partners, learners will be able to discuss these tasks in job interviews and successfully complete the tasks when they are hired. The focus on practical application in this course supports the learner’s confidence and development toward the position they are seeking.
