The Internship – a series of 3 courses

In this specialization, you will be introduced to the anatomy and physiology of the human body! Together, we will explore basic concepts as well as the structure (anatomy) and function (physiology) of the human body in the context of five major body systems:

  • The skin system
  • Skeletal system
  • Muscular system
  • Nervous system
  • The excretory system (hormones)

These courses will use free, open-source text with complementary activities and apps. With a unique approach to learning that combines art and science, enjoy discovering the mysteries and wonders of the human body!

Hands-on Learning Project

In each course in this setting, you will have opportunities to complete an anatomy art activity, an optional peer-reviewed project, graded quizzes, and a final exam at the end of the course to reinforce your learning while assessing the new skills you have acquired.

Details of the courses that make up the specialization

Anatomy and Physiology: Levels of Organization

Course 1
10 hours
4.7 (59 ratings)

What will you learn?

This course will provide a basic introduction to the human body. We will examine common organizational patterns and anatomical terms. We will also present a micro-view of essential components at the atomic and molecular levels, and then expand to the cellular and tissue levels. Finally, we will examine how tissues can form organs and even entire organ systems such as the skin.

Skills you will gain

  • Tissue types
  • Anatomical terms
  • Physiological processes
  • Organ systems
  • Clinical relevance

Anatomy and Physiology: Support and Movement

Course 2
11 hours
5.0 (17 ratings)

What will you learn?

The second course begins with a systemic approach to the anatomy and physiology of the human body at the level of organs, organ systems, and the organism. We will explore in detail three major body systems related to support and movement: the skeletal system and the muscular system.

Skills you will gain

  • Anatomical terms
  • Physiological processes
  • Organ systems
  • Clinical relevance
  • Research and information skills

Anatomy and Physiology: Regulation, Integration, and Control

Course 3
9 hours
4.9 (11 ratings)

What will you learn?

This course continues the systems approach to the anatomy and physiology of the human body at the organ, organ system, and organism levels. We will conduct a detailed investigation of two major body systems related to regulation and information integration: the nervous and endocrine systems.

Skills you will gain

  • Anatomical terms
  • Physiological processes
  • Organ systems
  • Clinical relevance
  • Research and information skills
