Keyword Strategy Builder

The Keyword Strategy Builder tool

The Keyword Strategy Builder tool (formerly known as Keyword Manager) (available only with a paid subscription) provides in-depth analysis of up to 10,000 keywords at once.

This tool helps you visualize and build a complete SEO content strategy using topics and pages.

When you enter your basic keywords, Keyword Strategy Builder will create a clear map of pages and subpages, guiding you which pages to create for your site and which keywords to use.

When you update the metrics, you can see if there have been any changes in SERP Features or high competition for a keyword since the last Semrush update.

Interesting Use: The Keyword Strategy Builder tool can be used not only to optimize existing content, but also to identify new topics to write about. By analyzing keywords with high search volume and low competition, you can find new content opportunities that can drive traffic to your site relatively easily.

Create a list and add keywords

To start using the tool, you’ll create a list and add keywords. You can add keywords to Keyword Strategy Builder in a number of ways:

  1. On the Keyword Strategy Builder homepage
  2. From the Keyword Magic Tool main page
  3. Keyword Gap Tool
  4. Organic Research (Locations and Location Changes Tabs)
  5. From a keyword review
  6. Manual import

To add keywords from the Keyword Strategy Builder homepage, you can create an ordered list (1) or a regular list (2).

Keyword Strategy Builder

For an organized list, enter up to five basic keywords, and the tool will create a list for you with topics, subpages, and subpages.
Creating an organized list may take some time, but you will receive an email when it is complete.

After the tool creates your list of topics and pages, you’ll see something like this:

Keyword Strategy Builder

You will see the intent of each page and subpage, KD%, volume, and number of keywords.

To add keywords from Keyword Overview to Keyword Strategy Builder, hover over the + next to the keyword and start a new list or select an existing list to add that keyword to. Clicking the + will send the monitored keyword to the default Keyword Strategy Builder list.

To add keywords from the Keyword Magic Tool to Keyword Strategy Builder, click the checkbox next to the individual keyword and select the blue “Add to Keyword List” button.

Alternatively, you can click the + sign next to each keyword and send the selected keyword to your Keyword Strategy Builder list.

The Keyword Gap tool offers similar options for adding keywords; use either the blue “+ Add to Keyword List” button or the + next to each keyword.

This process is the same for your organic research keywords. Simply click the Add to Keyword Strategy Builder button or the + sign in your organic research reports.

Find the “Add Keywords” button at the top right of the Keyword Strategy Builder screen to add keywords manually. The next window will allow you to add up to 10,000 keywords to Keyword Strategy Builder (add one word per line or separate with a comma).

List types

You can create an ordered, grouped, or regular list in Keyword Strategy Builder.

Keyword Strategy Builder

As mentioned above, you can create a curated list and a regular list from the Keyword Strategy Builder homepage.

You can create clustered lists from regular lists using the Cluster this list button.

Keyword Strategy Builder

An ordered list displays the Topics and Pages report and the Table report. Ordered lists build a content plan for a site with page titles and subpages.

A grouped list displays the Topics and Pages report and the Table report. Keyword grouping is the process of grouping similar keywords based on their search intent. You can find more information about keyword grouping here.

A regular list displays only the Table report.

Topics and pages

First, you’ll see the Topical Overview widget in the Topics and Pages tab. Note that the Topical Overview widget is only available with an ordered list.

This widget categorizes and dedicates your keywords to topics and pages. It creates a clear map of pages, subpages, and pages, guiding you on which pages to create for your site and which keywords to use.

Keyword Strategy Builder

A topic is a set of keyword groups, organized by topic and importance, targeted to your website’s main pages and their subpages.

Pages consist of a list of page titles and subpages, each with keywords associated with it.

Click on a page to see the keywords and metrics.

Keyword Strategy Builder

You will see a detailed overview of the topic keywords for the main pages and subpages in the page details list by clicking on a selected topic overview.

Keyword Strategy Builder

Each page and subpage is linked to specific keywords that can be targeted together with one page to effectively promote the site. With each page, it is easy to see the total keyword volume and average difficulty.

Your list of pages will appear in order of high search volume and low keyword difficulty. You can customize the sorting of your pages in different ways.

A green “High Ranking Potential” badge indicates a combination of high volume and low keyword difficulty.

Keyword Strategy Builder

The Intent column shows the intent of the page, which should determine the type of content you will use to cover the topic.

The Write content button allows you to send this group directly to SEO Writing Assistant.

Expanding a page reveals all keywords and content references to the page. The trash can icon allows you to remove a keyword from your Keyword Strategy Builder list.

table

The table report is another way to see your keywords.

With your keywords in Keyword Strategy Builder, you can analyze:

To narrow the focus of your report, use the filters above the table. You can separate by keyword, databases, SERP features, search intent, tags, or by a specific metric.

Intention

The Intent column shows the user’s search intent for each keyword. If you hover over the intent icon, you’ll see the purpose of the search. This feature enriches your keyword research with automated intent analysis.

The Intent filter is useful for sorting keywords, as you can quickly group terms by user intent: transactional, commercial, informational, and managerial. Use this data to update your existing content or create new content that matches user intent – the right content will attract the right audience.

Keyword Strategy Builder

Once you have filtered by intent, you can export the report for the filtered group and also send the group to other tools (SEO Writing Assistant, Position Tracking, and PPC Keyword Tool).

Keyword Tagging

Adding tags can separate your keywords into groups. You can tag your keywords in Keyword Strategy Builder using the checkboxes or simply clicking the tag field below the keyword.

Keyword Strategy Builder

You can then filter your list by tags, export by tags, and send tagged keywords to other tools (Position Tracking and PPC Keyword Tool).

Update metrics

The highest competition and click potential will only be recorded after clicking Update Metrics . After clicking, you will see the list of snippets in the top results in the SERP for the keyword at that moment.

Some metrics, like search volume or CPC, are displayed monthly from the date you added or last updated. However, metrics like SERP Features, KD%, or High Competition can be manually updated to show real-time results.

Sharing lists

You can share existing Keyword Strategy Builder lists through the Keyword Strategy Builder homepage:

Keyword Strategy Builder

The share button is located just above your word lists. Once you click the button, a pop-up window will appear asking you to select a list (or multiple lists) you want to share. You will then enter the email address of the user you want to give access to your lists. You can share a list with multiple people by entering each email address separated by a comma.

Keyword Strategy Builder

You can decide whether to share with viewer or editor access. Users with editor access can make changes to your lists.

Please note that when other users use the “Update Metrics” feature on lists you have shared with them, the restrictions on refreshing your words apply to you as well.

You can also find a share button next to each list:

Keyword Strategy Builder

Clicking it will open the list’s sharing settings, where you can share the selected list, see all the users the list is shared with, change permissions, or stop sharing.

If you receive a shared list, you can see all the lists saved for you by logging into Keyword Strategy Builder and selecting the Shared with Me tab:Keyword Strategy Builder

Here, you can see the list owner’s email and leave shared lists if necessary.

Only the owner of the list can delete it.
Course account holders have editorial access to secondary user lists by default.

Limitations

The limitations on using Keyword Strategy Builder depend on your subscription level and are as follows:

The total number of words you can add to Keyword Strategy Builder across all your lists:

  • All subscribers: 100,000 keywords

Number of times you can group or generate a word list per month:

  • Free – 0 times
  • Peru – 10 times
  • Puppy – 30 times
  • Business – 50 times

The act of grouping or building a list counts against these limitations.

Even if you create a new list that contains 35 groups, this action will count against your limits as one.

Deleting keyword lists does not restore limits. Limits are renewed monthly, so a Pro subscription allows you to aggregate a list 10 times per month.

Number of keywords you can update metrics for per month:

  • Free – 0
  • Peru – 250
  • Puppy – 1,000
  • Businesses – 5,000

List sharing limitations:

  • All paid users can share lists with editor access with other paid participants.
  • All paid users can share lists with viewer access with all users (including free users).
  • Free users cannot share Keyword Strategy Builder lists.
Tip: When building a curated list, try to start with keywords that have high search volume but low competition. This can help you find content opportunities that can drive traffic to your site relatively easily.
