Chapter 1: Introduction to AutoCAD
If you’re one of those people who thinks about everything related to design and drafting, you’ve probably heard of AutoCAD . It’s the world’s leading software for drafting and drawing… but what’s really important to know is how it can upgrade your work! Let’s clear things up a bit.
What is AutoCAD?
AutoCAD is a software developed by Autodesk , designed for architects, engineers, designers, and other professionals. It allows you to create precise drawings and complex plans of buildings, devices, and even everyday items.
The first time I started using AutoCAD, I felt like a child being introduced to his first computer. The software provides a lot of tools, and after you get used to it a bit, it really replaces the need for some sketch paper and paints.
Basic principles of using AutoCAD
So before we dive right in, it’s worth understanding a few basic concepts:
- Line: The basic line in any drawing. You can create lines of different lengths and angles.

- Shapes: Rectangles, circles, triangles – any shape is possible! (These shapes can also be created using the LINE command)

- Offset: Allows you to easily create parallel lines. There is a freehand option or alternatively precise measurement between line and line.

- Dimensions: Option to give precise dimensions to each element so that the drawing can proceed. (In the arrow there is an option to also give dimensions to radii, angles, etc.)

[note_box] Tip: When using the Offset command, try playing with the distances to see how it affects your drawing. It can help you understand space better! [/note_box]
How do I get started with AutoCAD?
In the meantime, the first step is to download the software. There are several versions on the Autodesk website – note that the free version for students is quite excellent and can provide really high-quality programs.
Installation and opening
After the installation is complete, you will open the software and see a main screen. If you are like most people, at this point you will be sure that you are in the middle of a flight course and not learning a drawing program! But don’t worry – this is natural.
What are the basic tools in the software?
When you open AutoCAD, you will find a bar related to the various tools. At this point, it is worth getting to know them:
- Home Panel: This is where the basic tools for drawing in various shapes are located.

- Commands: The input box at the bottom of the screen will be your best friend. All you have to do is type the command you want, you can also type the command directly without clicking anything first. (For example – typing the word LINE and Enter on the keyboard will do the same command as clicking the command itself in the HOME PANEL)

- Layers: One of AutoCAD’s powerful features – you can organize your drawings into different layers, thus avoiding the hassle of having lots of drawings on top of each other.

And now – let’s draw!
Once you know the basic tools, it’s time to try creating a simple drawing. Try creating a circle and rectangles – it’s pretty easy in the end! When you sketch, remember to maintain high levels of patience, at least at first – it’s part of the process.
[note_box] Tip: When you start drawing, try playing with layers to separate different parts of the drawing. This will help you stay organized and make your work easier. [/note_box]
Summarizing the chapter
So, at the end of this chapter, we can say that AutoCAD is a great tool for anyone involved in drafting. Let’s remember that learning such a program requires time and patience, but the fun and efficiency remove all difficulties. In the next chapter, we will dive a little deeper into the advanced tools of the software and learn how to do even more amazing things!
