Chapter 5: Working with Layers
[fact_box]
**Interesting fact:** Layers aren’t just limited to graphic design. In video editing software, layers are used to create special effects, such as adding text or animations to a video. This allows you to edit each element separately and create more professional and complex videos.

What are layers anyway?
Layers are like stacks of pancakes; each one is separable, you can put things on it and arrange them however you want. In the graphic world, layers allow you to work on different elements of a design separately without affecting everything else. This allows you to improve your work and make changes easily.
How do you work with layers?
Creating new layers
To start working with layers, you need to open a new project and create layers. First, we will click on the LAYER PROPERTIES tab in the layers and a new window will open, then we will click on the button marked below in the image – and this will open a new layer that we will need to define.

**Note:** When working with many layers, use different colors to easily differentiate between them. This can be especially helpful for complex projects.

Layer management
When you start working on a project, you’ll find yourself working with quite a few layers. It’s smart to organize them! Giving your layers clear names (like “background,” “text,” “image”) can save you a lot of confusion later on.

To hide/show layers
Just like you can hide things behind doors, you can hide layers that you don’t want to see right now. This can be really handy when you’re working on a lot of layers. Clicking on the light next to the layer will do the trick. A layer that’s on is a yellow light, a layer that’s off is a light blue light.

What are layer effects?
Layers don’t have to be flat; they can be brought to life with interesting effects! Most tools have a variety of effects that can enhance your layers. For example:
- Shadow – creates depth.
- Burgundy – a bit of a bronze effect.
- Highlighting – attracts attention.
Freezing layers
If there’s a layer you don’t want to change by mistake, you can freeze it! In most programs, all you have to do is click the “Freeze Layers” button.

️ **Practical tip:** If you are working on a large project, try freezing layers that are not currently in use. This can improve software performance and prevent errors.

Principles of design with layers
Color combination
Layers can be great for combining colors! Don’t forget to play with different colors on different layers to create contrasts.

Texture
Layers of texture can turn a boring design into something really interesting. Don’t forget to look for different textures like fabric, wood, or metal!

Line thickness
Layers also include the line thickness you want to define the layer with (for example, concrete should be thicker than a block wall/furniture should have a thinner line thickness than the rest of the plan).

transparency
You can also play with the transparency of the line or texture.

Main problems and management
Often, they will encounter problems like layers hiding each other, misaligned layers, or incorrect layers. If this happens to you, take a moment to stop, examine the layers, and rearrange them if necessary.

⚠️ **Please note:** If a particular layer doesn’t look right, check to see if it’s not hidden or if there’s another layer hiding it.
