No prior knowledge required
No unnecessary risks
This program is designed to introduce you to the world of big data and how to handle it. The first course aims to introduce the student to the impact of big data on modern society, both in business and in politics and government, in the media and in scientific research.
During courses 2, 3 and 4 we will learn how to identify, capture, process, analyze and visualize data, from a “user” perspective, with a practical orientation. Finally, the culminating project allows the student to apply the acquired knowledge to a practical case in the field of astronomy.
We have an excellent team of lecturers, with extensive experience in the subject, both from academia and industry.
You will need a computer with a 64-bit operating system that supports maintenance, with at least 6 GB of memory (8 GB recommended) and 20 GB of free disk space.
The student will face the challenge of working with big data from the field of cosmology, with the aim of successfully sorting galaxies based on their shape. From a set of images of galaxies obtained with advanced telescopes in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) project, the student, under guidance, will develop a method for systematically sorting galaxies and present a report to an imaginary group of scientists.
The lecturers in this course are collaborating with the European Space Agency (ESA) on the Euclid mission (a space telescope to map the geometry of the universe).
