The UI/UX Design specialization brings a design-focused approach to user interface and user experience design, offering practical, skills-based guidance that shares the perspective of visual communication, rather than just marketing or programming.
You will learn best practices and current conventions in UX design and apply them to create effective and engaging experiences across screens for websites or apps.
User interface and user experience design is a highly sought-after field, but the skills and knowledge you will gain in this specialization are applicable to a wide range of careers, from marketing to web design and human-computer interaction.
Learners who enroll in the UI/UX Design specialization are eligible for a free extended trial (one month) of a full suite of UX design tools from Optimal Workshop. Details are available in Course 3 of the specialization, Web Design: Strategy and Information Architecture.
In this internship, you will participate in a number of short exercises—both visual and non-visual—to apply the knowledge gained, from organizing and structuring screen-based content, through defining goals and strategy, to creating sketches and visual models.
At the end of the internship, you will create a mid-level digital prototype with simulated functions, as well as a comprehensive plan for a complex website.
This course focuses on the broad question of what an interface is and what the designer’s role is in creating a user interface. We’ll talk about how to design and express meaning through color, font, and imagery, which are important for interfaces to function clearly and smoothly. Through a series of lectures and visual exercises, you’ll focus on the different elements and components that make up a designer’s skills. By the end of the course, you’ll be able to describe the key formal elements of clear, consistent, and intuitive UI design, and apply the skills you’ve learned to design a simplified, screen-based interface.
This is the first course in the UI/UX Design specialization, which brings a design-centric approach to user interface (UI) and user experience (UX) design, and offers practical, skills-focused instruction that tends to take the visual communication angle, rather than focusing solely on marketing or programming.
This hands-on course explores how content is organized and designed to create an experience for the user, and the role of the designer in creating the user experience. You will go through a concise process that serves as a roadmap for developing a strong UI/UX design: from ideation, through sitemap, to creating a paper and digital prototype. Building on the design skills learned in the previous course, you will apply this methodology to create a digital prototype for a multi-screen application you have created yourself.
At the end of the course, you will be able to describe and apply best practices and customs in UX design, and use the basic principles of UX design to shape the user experience of given content.
This is the second course in the UI/UX Design specialization, which brings a design-centric approach to UI design and UX design, and offers practical, skills-focused instruction, leading from a visual communication perspective.
This course focuses on the early challenges of user experience (UX) including research, planning, goal setting, user understanding, content organization, and interactive sequence development. The concepts we cover will have many applications across all types of interactive media (apps, digital kiosks, games), but our focus will be on designing contemporary, responsive websites. In this course, you will complete the first half of a large-scale project—developing a comprehensive plan for a complex website—by defining the strategy and scope of the website, as well as developing its information architecture and overall structure.
Along the way we will also talk about:
The work and knowledge in this course will carry you to the final course in the UI/UX Design specialization, “Web Design: From Sketches to Prototypes,” where you will tackle—finally—squiggles, visual examples, and clickable prototypes.
This is the third course in the UI/UX Design specialization, which brings a design-centric approach to UI design and UX design, and offers practical, skills-focused instruction, leading from a visual communication perspective.
This course focuses on applying early UX research to real-world user interfaces: creating mockups, high-quality examples, and clickable prototypes. During the course, we will also talk about:
This course is a continuation of the course “Web Design: Strategy and Information Architecture”, in which students completed the first half of a large-scale project—developing a comprehensive plan for a complex website. If you intend to complete the course assignments to earn a certificate, you must first complete the course “Strategy and Information Architecture” to get the materials and data needed to begin creating summaries and examples in this course.
This is the fourth and final course in the UI/UX Design specialization, which brings a design-centric approach to UI design and UX design, and offers practical, skills-focused instruction, leading from a visual communication perspective.
