Internship – 6-part course series

This specialization teaches learners how to design and implement effective evaluations of large-scale health programs, with a focus on low- and middle-income countries.

Applied Learning Project

Successful completion of the internship, including all six courses, requires approximately 75 hours of student work. There are no project-based activities, but there are comprehensive final exams for each of the six courses.

Course 1: Evaluation of Large-Scale Public Health Programs

This course offers an introduction to the evaluation of large-scale public health programs, with an emphasis on low- and middle-income countries.

Examine an evaluation of an international health program.
Develop a technical evaluation plan for the RMNCAH program.
Guide program managers and donors through the process of agreeing on evaluation activities.
Make informed decisions about continuing their education or a professional role as an evaluator.

Course 2: Planning and evaluating programs to strengthen health systems

This course provides an introduction to planning and evaluation with the goal of strengthening the health system.

Define what is meant by strengthening health systems.
Describe health system frameworks.
Plan and prioritize the implementation of programs in health systems.
To detail methods of evaluating programs in health systems.
Present tools to assist in assessment planning.
Interpret system evaluation results.

Course 3: Evaluating the Delivery of Health Programs

This course provides in-depth knowledge about the strength of implementation and quality of care in the delivery of health programs.

Explain why evaluating the delivery of health programs is necessary.
Plan an evaluation of health program delivery.
Interpret evaluation results in the context of effectiveness.
Describe RADAR’s tools for assessing the strength of the application.

Course 4: Household Surveys for Program Evaluation in Low- and Middle-Income Countries

This course offers an introduction to household surveys for assessment in low- and middle-income countries.

Explain what coverage is and why it is important.
Plan, implement, and analyze a household survey.
Calculate an appropriate sample size for a household survey.
Design a questionnaire.
To present the challenges in designing and implementing surveys.

Course 5: Measuring and Modeling Impact in Evaluations

The goal of the course is to provide a better understanding of various indicators for assessing impact in the areas of maternal and neonatal health.

Discuss current data sources.
Identify advantages and disadvantages of measurement methods.
Provide training on the Lives Saved Tool (LiST).

Course 6: Analyzing and Interpreting Large-Scale Plans

This course is intended for operators, managers, and evaluators of health programs.

Transform quantitative components of a measurement plan into an analytical plan.
Perform quantitative analyses of survey results.
Interpret the meaning of the analysis results.
Disseminate the evaluation results to program operators.
