This five-course series explores dimensions of applied knowledge related to the social determinants of health. The specialization will use the Hour-Z-Action model to support multi-perspective thinking as a way to focus and process data-driven actions related to the social determinants of health.
Offers an overview of definitions and theoretical perspectives that will form the foundation for this specialization.
Highlights how social determinants of health can affect vulnerable populations in different ways.
Examines issues that are particularly relevant to healthcare professionals and administrators, as well as communities.
Examines the methodological approaches and research tools that inform an understanding of best practices when working with scientific teams, communities, and data.
Focuses on planetary health as a fundamental determinant of health that is part of a shared future vision. Each course also includes a data application module, where students will experience analyzing, presenting, and interpreting social determinants of health data.
Each course in this specialization will include a data application component, where students will have the opportunity to practice using R to analyze, present, and interpret social determinants of health data using NHANES and Omaha datasets. Students will then be able to apply these skills to their own datasets as part of a peer-reviewed assignment.
The first of five courses introduces students to the social determinants of health, providing an overview of the concepts and definitions that will form the foundation for this specialization. Topics in this course include:
The second of five courses focuses on how social determinants of health affect vulnerable populations. Students will delve into four groups of vulnerable populations and how social determinants of health contribute to poor health outcomes experienced by these populations. Topics in this course include:
The third of five courses addresses issues related to social determinants of health and health systems. In addition, the course will focus on the relationship between social determinants of health, mental health, substance use, and trauma. Topics in this course include:
The fourth of five courses explores the methodological approaches and research tools that help us understand best practices when working with science teams, communities, and data. Topics in this course include:
The fifth and final course focuses on planetary health as a fundamental determinant of health. As we look at how human health depends on the health of natural systems on Earth, we will also explore how future-thinking principles can be applied to planetary health initiatives. Topics in this course include:
