Internship – 5-part course series

If you want to help your patients or clients manage conditions or symptoms such as pain and anxiety, this specialization will give you the knowledge and skills you need. Over the course of these five courses, you will explore complementary therapies, including:

  • Natural medicine
  • Guided imagery
  • Aromatherapy
  • Mindfulness

For each treatment studied, you will acquire skills that will allow you to:

  • Assess whether treatment is appropriate
  • Educate patients or clients about benefits and risks
  • Manage or recommend the use
  • Assess whether the treatment was beneficial (our approach – AEAE)

By the end of the internship, you will be familiar with:

  • Application methods
  • Mechanisms of action
  • The research evidence for specific treatments
  • Safety and quality considerations

In short, be prepared to collaborate with patients in developing an integrated treatment plan that is tailored to their needs and preferences. It is important to note that while the primary focus is on working with patients or clients, the information is also useful for your own personal health and well-being.

Hands-on Learning Project

Each course in this specialization includes a peer-reviewed project in which complementary therapies are applied to a specific situation. To begin, you will analyze what it takes to bring complementary therapies to your workplace or other setting. In later courses, you will explore:

  • The benefits and risks of herbs and essential oils for specific patients or clients
  • Creating a guided imagery recording
  • Recommendation based on evidence and patient preferences regarding:
    • Medicinal plants
    • Aromatherapy
    • Guided imagery
    • Mindfulness practices

Throughout, the focus will be on assessing patient needs and educating and guiding patients in clear, simple, and patient-centered language.
