Monthly price
The monthly price is an ongoing subscription charge for using Shopify, which varies depending on the plan you choose. The price associated with the plan you choose is included in the bill that is issued at the end of your designated billing cycle.
If you sign up for annual billing cycles, you can receive a discount on your subscription bill.
Credit card rates
If you use Shopify Payments as your payment provider, Shopify charges you a small fee to allow you to accept major credit cards, like Visa and Mastercard, as payment on your store. You don’t pay any fees to the credit card provider (like Visa or Mastercard) themselves. These fees vary between online and physical transactions using Shopify POS, due to the security and risk exposure of accepting an online payment versus accepting a physical payment.
Credit card rates vary depending on the plan you choose.
Following Brexit, Visa and Mastercard have changed how they classify and charge payments for transactions in the UK and the EU. To comply with these changes, Shopify classifies these transactions as international transactions and charges at the current international rate for your region.
Third-party transaction fees
Third-party transaction fees are charges that apply to each transaction when you use a third-party payment provider to accept payments from customers. These fees cover Shopify’s costs for integrating with third-party payment providers, and vary depending on the plan you choose.
When you use Shopify Payments, you don’t incur third-party transaction fees for orders processed through Shopify Payments, Shop Pay, Shop Pay Installments, and Paypal Express, nor do you incur transaction fees for manual payment methods like cash, cash on delivery (COD), and bank transfers.
Stores on the Shopify Plus plan that use Shopify Payments as their primary payment gateway are exempt from transaction fees for all other payment methods they use.
Payment provider
Payment providers offer a service that transfers money from your customers to you. Credit card payment providers allow your customers to pay using a credit card. If you want to accept credit card payments from your customers, you can set up Shopify Payments or third-party payment providers.
Shopify Payments
Shopify has its own payment provider, Shopify Payments, which integrates directly with your payment gateway. If your business is eligible for Shopify Payments:
- You only pay the credit card rate with no additional third-party transaction fees.
- Your customers can enter their payment information at checkout without leaving your online store.
- You can set up Shopify Payments directly from your Shopify admin, without having to log in to another website or account.
- You can see your payments in real time, directly from your Shopify admin.
If you want to offer your customers another way to pay, for example, via PayPal or with a customized payment method, you can set this up in addition to Shopify Payments without having to pay additional third-party transaction fees.
External payment providers
If Shopify Payments is not available in your country, or if you prefer not to use it, you can enable one of the third-party payment providers that integrate with Shopify. In this case, Shopify charges third-party transaction fees that vary depending on the plan you choose. Your third-party payment provider charges you its own credit card rates, separately.
Once you decide which payment provider you want to use from the available options , you can configure your payment settings in your Shopify admin.
Billing cycle
A billing cycle is the 30-day period in which Shopify charges your plan costs. You can’t choose the date you’re billed, but you can extend your billing cycle to a longer period of one year to get a discount.
A different billing cycle applies to app subscriptions, so their billing cycles may not always match your Shopify subscription billing date.
If you ever pause or deactivate your store, also make sure you cancel your app subscriptions to avoid additional charges in the future.
