What products you want to sell and what your store will look like are the two most important choices you’ll make for your store. To get started, add your first product, choose a few different templates to see which one looks best, and then set up a domain for your store.

Add your first product

You can add and update products directly from the Products page in your Shopify admin. If you’re looking for ideas for products to sell, you can check out the Shopify Blog .

Steps:

  1. Log in to your Shopify admin.
  2. Select the “Products” option from the menu.
  3. Click “Add product”.
  4. Fill in the required details for the product, including name, description, price, and images.
  5. Click “Save” to save the new product.

Choose a template

To help you get started, the Templates page in your admin comes with a default template when you sign up for a Shopify account. If you want to customize a different template for your store, you’ll need to add one to your admin.

To add a template to your store:

  • You can add a free template from within the system.
  • You can purchase a paid template from the Shopify Template Store. It’s important to note that paid templates must be purchased before you can publish them on your store, but you can try a paid template before you buy.

Adding a free template from the system

Free templates are developed by Shopify. Help with customizations for free templates is supported by Shopify.

Steps:

  1. Visit the templates page in the management system.
  2. Choose a free template from the list.
  3. Click “Add template”.
  4. Adapt the template to your needs.

Add a template from the template store

Paid templates are developed by external designers. Help with third-party template customizations is provided by the template designer.

Steps:

  1. Visit the Shopify Template Store and choose a template. If you’re still in the free trial, choose a free template to avoid paying any usage fees.
  2. If you selected a free template, click Add template or Start with this template . If you selected a paid template, click Buy template to purchase the template. Paid templates are non-refundable. To make sure it’s right for you, you can try a paid template before you purchase it.
  3. For paid templates, click Confirm Billing to confirm the payment. The template will be added to the Templates page in your admin system.

Experience a paid template in your store

You can try a paid template to see how it looks with your products, brand colors, and style before you decide to purchase the template. As you review the template, you can make adjustments using the template editor. Any changes you decide to make are saved when you purchase the template. You can try up to 19 paid templates, allowing you to compare different templates before purchasing.

Steps:

  1. Visit the Shopify Template Store and choose a paid template.
  2. Click Try Template . A preview of the template will load into your store. In the toolbar at the bottom of the page, there are three buttons: Close Preview, Buy Template, and Customize Template.
  3. Do one of the following:
    • To stop viewing the preview, click Close Preview .
    • To purchase the template, click Buy Template .
    • To change the template settings using the template editor, click Customize Template .

A paid template will be added to the Templates page in your admin area, even if you choose not to purchase it. Paid templates that you try will come with a Template Trial label.

Interesting use: Many stores use custom templates to create unique shopping experiences, such as virtual pop-up stores or 3D product displays.
Tip: When choosing a template, think about user experience. A template with simple and clear navigation can improve your customers’ shopping experience and increase sales.

Setting a domain for your store

Your store domain is the URL, or website address, where your customers can find your store online. You can purchase a new domain for your store or transfer an existing domain.

Purchasing a new domain from Shopify

  1. Purchase your domain through Shopify.
  2. Turn on auto-renewal so your domain registration doesn’t get canceled accidentally.
  3. Set your Shopify domain as your primary domain so that it becomes the domain that your customers see in their browser, search results, and social media.
  4. Set up email forwarding so your customers can email you at@mycustomdomain.com your.
  5. Send yourself a few test emails to make sure you can receive inquiries from customers.

Purchasing a new domain from a third-party provider

  1. Purchase your custom domain from a third-party provider.
  2. Follow the instructions for special domains to set up the main domain and subdomains.
    • If you purchased your domain from Google Domains, GoDaddy, or 1&1 IONOS, you’ll be automatically connected to your domain.
    • If you purchased your domain from another domain provider and have their requirements, connect your domain manually.
  3. Set your primary domain so that it becomes the domain that your customers see in their browser, search results, and social media.
  4. Set up email hosting so your customers can send you emails at your special domain email address.

Transferring an existing domain

If you want to transfer an existing domain to use in your Shopify store, follow these steps.

Steps:

  1. Log in to your Shopify admin.
  2. Select the “Domains” option from the menu.
  3. Click “Transfer Domain”.
  4. Fill in the required details and complete the transfer.
